Ok guys so after looking at the problem we talked about in class today I have to apologize for my brain fart and say that I am quite aggrevated with myself. I guess it happens to the best of us but here is the problem solved along with an explanation of why it is solved this way.
29a) Because they are asking you to write an equation that relates the age of the car to the value of the car that is LOST, you have a positive slope. If you remember in class we kept thinking that it would have a negative slope becase as the car gets older it is worth less money which is true, however they are not asking for the relationship between age of the car and the value of the car, they are asking for the relationship between the age of the car and how much the car has went down in value. So that being understood it is easy to come up with an equation. The difference in y-values is 1800 times the difference in x-values (because every year the car loses $1800 in value) so you formula is y = 1800x. The book was correct..darn huh?
29b) Now we can use that formula to solve for the age of the car when the value is $300. Remember that y is NOT the value of the car. It is the amount of money that the car has LOST in value. In order to find that we have to know the original cost of the car. We know that the car loses $1800 in value every year. We also know that after 1 year the car is worth $12,000. You need to add $1,800 to $12,000 and that gives the original value of the car ($13,800). We then find how much the car has LOST in value. To find this you take the original price (13,800) and subtract the current price (300) which gives you $13,500 LOST. This is what you substitute in for y in the formula and solve as I have below!
13,500 = 1800x
7.5 = x (divide both sides by 1800)
so when the car is valued at $300 it will be 7 years 6 month old. Phew, good thing I didn't give you any like this for homework tonight eh?
Make sure you complete Pg. 203 #32-37! Have a great evening!

Hey guys! I'm sorry this is so late today, I forgot to do it early and just now remembered! Unfortunately I don't have lesson plans at home and I can't remember exactly which classes have what pages etc. So, if someone from each class could post what homework you had it would be awesome. If you have any questions on problems post a comment, I'll check for any problems after church tonight ( around 8 o'clock) so check back later! See ya tomorrow!

24 = -2p
-2 -2
-12 = p
Check: 5(-12 + 3) + 9 = 3(-12 - 2) + 6
5(-9) + 9 = 3(-14) + 6
-45 + 9 = -42 + 6
-36 = -36 Checks!!!

Monday...wait I mean Tuesday is over!! I hope all of you had a great Labor Day weekend. I spent mine at the old home place getting prepared for the upcoming deer/turkey/bear season! Good food and family is where it's at! As far as school wide activities this week there are a few:
1. Football game away vs. Buffalo Thursday 7pm
2. On Friday some students will be going to BillyBob's for a reward for testing well on the WESTEST.
3. Mid-Term ends this Wednesday, Reports go out next Wednesday (can you believe that already?)
Here are your daily summaries:
3rd, 5th, 7th:
We went over how to solve equations today. Remember to use the inverse operation of the operation shown in the problem. For instance, if you have an equation like this; x+4=7 you would subtract 4 from both sides giving you an answer of x=3. For homework tonight complete Pg. 68 #8-18 even, Pg. 72 #8-18 even, and Pg. 44 #12-28. TEST THURSDAY!!
4th:
We went over our scatter plot project from Friday. You are to complete Pg. 53 #1-25. TEST THURSDAY!!
8th:
Homework from Friday was graded. Complete the study guide (Pg. 67 #1-25) for homework, we will go over it after we grade it for right/wrong tomorrow before going through it. TEST THURSDAY!!

Phew, what a week! So glad to see a three day weekend and I am sure you are glad to not have to see me for three days! There is one event of note that will be taking place Saturday, that is a cross country meet. I believe it is at Cabell Midland at 8:30am. Here is your summary for the day.
3rd, 5th, 7th:
All agendas and journals were checked today. The students were paired and worked on a worksheet together, it is double sided and needs to be completed and will be graded on Tuesday. All grades are up to date in edline. If you don't know your username/password I wrote your grade in your agenda today (parents Mr. Barnet is the one you need to see to get that username/password if you do not have it).
4th:
All agendas and journals were checked, grades are up to date in edline. Today we did a little activity in class. Students had to measure each other's height and arm span and place the info in a scatter plot. There were also a few questions on pg. 39 they needed to answer about their results, make sure that is finished by Tuesday.
8th:
There was much confusion on the homework last night, which tells me I wasn't as clear about how to do the work as I would like to be. So, we did a little reteaching and I think everything is much better than it was last night, I can always tell when things don't go well at home you guys are the first ones in my room in the morning with "that look" on your face! I hope you feel better about it now, so to prove to me you understand you are to finish Pg. 49 #20-25, 27-29.
Enjoy your weekend, I'll be thinking about you while I'm on the lake....maybe :)

Can you smell the weekend? Another great day here at Milton Middle concludes tonight with hopefully a good 'ol fashioned thumping of Hurricane! It should be a great game, remember it's @ Hurricane 7pm, Go Panthers!! In other school news WESTEST Scores were handed back so parents make sure you take a look at those. There were also two sheets handed out that explain how to read the results, take a look at those as well! Here is your daily summary:
3rd, 5th, and 7th:
We reviewed writing equations from verbal sentences and problem situations. Remember there is a three step process to writing equations (Words, Variable, and Equation) Homework tonight is Pg. 59 #6-14 and Pg. 55 #45, 48, 52.
4th Period:
We covered how to construct scatter plots. Homework is Pg. 43 #4-9, 11 and Pg. 36 #11
8th Period:
Class was shortened by 10 minutes today due to having to hand back WESTEST Scores, so things might be a little fuzzy to you tonight. Just a reminder that # 11 is worked out completely in the back of the book so you can look at that if you get stuck. I also want to talk about #4 because we didn't get to go over an example that was similar to it due to shortened time. Basically what you want to do is make up your own table of values. I suggest using -2, -1, 0, 1, and 2 for your x values. Your table of values will look like this (you finish it) don't forget to tell me whether or not it is a function!:
x y=1/2x-6 y
-2 y=1/2(-2)-6 -7
-1
0
1
2
I hope that helps you, if you still can't get it leave a comment or see me sometime before class tomorrow. The entire homework assignment is Pg. 49 #1-9, 11, 18

2 more days to go then we get a three day weeekkkeeennnndddd!!! Remember we have our first football game tomorrow, and the Herd is headed north to take on the Buckeyes (my two favorite teams, I still don't know who to route for!). Here is your summary for the day.
3rd, 5th, and 7th:
Went over dividing and multiplying integers. This should be somewhat of a review. Homework is Pg. 54 #3, 6, 14, 26, 35 Pg. 48 #23, 27, 29-31 Pg. 34. #39, 43, 44.
4th
We went over how to tell whether or not a relation is a function. Remeber guys in order for it to be a function each x value MUST have a unique y value.
Here is an example of a relation that is not a function:
(2,3),(2, 4),(4,7),(5,8) notice that the x-value "2" has a y-value of both "3" and "4" so that means it is not a function.
Here is an example of a relation that is a function:
(1,2),(3,4),(5,7),(8,1) notice that each x-value has a unique y value.
Homework for tonight is Pg. 35 #7,9,10
8th:
We went over how to represent relations and interpret graphs of relations. Homework for tonight is Pg. 41 #12, 20, 21-23, 27, 27, 33 Pg. 34 #23, 30, 32 and Pg. 27 #43, 47. Just a reminder that the depedent variable relies on the independent variable. Keep it straight!!
Have a great evening, see ya tomorrow!!!

No Internet at the school today? Ahhhhhhhh!! We went over a review for our respective classes today. In 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th period we checked journals and agendas along with homework. I would tell you it's up to date on Edline but unless the Internet gets fixed that will be impossible. In other news the boys laid down the law against Winfield 30-6. I guess I gave the Generals a little too much credit. Way to go guys, a special shout out to Alex Childers who scored 3 td's, honorale mention to Bobby Mitchell who also scored. Have a great weekend!!

Tuesday's gone with the wind! Books were passed out to the regular class and Algebra 1 class today (still don't have Pre-Algebra, but they should be coming soon). After exploring the book for a few minutes I wanted to let you know about it's online capability. There are several great resources available to you and your parents. All you have to do is follow the instructions on the inside of the cover. The website is http://www.glencoe.com/. The best thing you can do is to go on there and play, so have fun! Here is your daily summary:
3rd, 5th, and 7th periods: Homework was checked, grades are on edline. We did a little activity on absolute value and passed out books. No work for tonight, enjoy it won't happen often.
4th period: Homework was checked, grades are on edline. We went over a few problem spots on the homework. Notes were taken on add, subt, mult, and div. properties and a worksheet was given.
8th period: We went over the homework. Notes were taken on numerical and algebraic expressions. Homework is Pg. 13 #15-29, 36-41.
Remember the football scrimmage on Thursday @ Winfield 7pm.

Got the first Monday of the year taken care of! All of the classes had a short lesson followed by a worksheet to take home and finish if they didn't get it finished in class. Tonight is our open house (where the parents get to meet and mingle with us teachers), it is from 6-8pm. I strongly encourage parents to come out and meet all their child's teachers. There is valuable information passed along at these meetings and it is much easier to communicate with someone you have met before, remember proactive is much better than reactive. Here are a few tidbits of info for this week:
Today: 7th and 8th grade open house begins in the gym at 6pm
Thursday: Football Scrimmage @ Winfield 7pm
Get out and enjoy some sunshine!!
Don't forget if you have any questions to leave them in a comment for myself or a fellow student to answer!!

2 days down, 178 to go! Today we took a county RTI test in all classes. I was happy with the results! Great job guys! We also went over the kids expectations for me. Some of the suggestions were no homework, lots of extra credit, and pizza parties every Friday. Oh how I wish all of this were possible! Overall I think we have had a very successful start. Remember to post a comment on yesterdays blog entry for extra credit!! On a side note the cross country team is having a car wash today until dark at Advance Auto Parts and Foodland. See ya Monday!!

First Blog of the 2010-2011 year!! We are off and running already! In each of the classes we got to know each other a little better and went over the class syllabus. Remember to post your comments with your name included for a few bonus points! Also, don't forget to have your parents sign and bring back all the forms you received in homeroom. See ya tomorrow!

Wrapping up the week by wrapping up our class projects. They are going to take me quite some time to grade but I will do my best to be speedy. Next week it will be back to business as usual by starting a unit on percents. Later in this unit I will be asking for some interest rates on bank accounts, credit cards, and other loans. Don't be alarmed I don't want to know any personal business, I just want to make the unit as realistic as possible....all I want is interest rates. In the advanced class we will be moving into more geometry...whooohoooo! Way to go Boys basketball! Good luck in the championship Monday against Huntington!
Thursday, February 18, 2010
I think the 2 hr. delay was a good way to ease back into the groove! The students worked on their Road Trip Projects all day. These are due tomorrow at the end of class, they are not to be taken out of the class however. They shouldn't have a problem completing them. With tomorrow's class they will have been given 2 hours of class time to complete them and they are working with a partner! The advanced class' Chapter 5 test grades are finally on edline. I will explain the grading scale tomorrow in class when I give them back, if your child cannot remember or doesn't understand do not hesitate to email me a question. Hope to see everyone out at the game tonight! We are going for our first ever championship and we need all the support we can get! See you here at 5!

Is has been awhile! I apologize for not being more diligent with the blog but I think everyone gets a little busy and behind with all the holidays and snow days, so let's do a little catching up shall we? In the regular recently we have been in a review chapter on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. We are currently on multiplying, tomorrow we will cover dividing and Wednesday we will take a quiz on all operations. The reason for reviewing these operations is we will be using them in equations in the upcoming weeks. The classes have gotten seperated a little with the early release day on Thursday so in 1st, 2nd, and 6th period today we did Pg. 204 #1-13 and in 8th period we did Pg. 204 #22-35. In the advanced class we have started into Geometry which has been a review thus far because we are going over vocabulary (point, line, plane, etc.) Today they had Pg. 230-231 #7-22.
In other news around the school there are Basketball games tonight @ Enslow:

JV Boys - 5:30
Varsity Boys - 6:30
Also note there will be no school Thursday, Friday, and next Monday....will we ever get back on track?!
