The direct variation (k) of a line will not change, it doesn't matter what x and y are. So you need to find k when they give you x and y and then plug it in for k when they give you just y or just x. For example number 24...

6=k10 (substitute)
6/10=k (divide by 10 both sides)
3/5=k (simplify 6/10 to 3/5)
Now that you have k=3/5 you can solve the equation when y=18
y=kx
18=3/5(x) (Substitute)
30=x (divide both sides by 3/5)
If y=18 then x=30
